The 1975 Ratification of the ERA in North Dakota and the Women Who Lead the Way - a Public Discussion this Friday

Fargo, ND – In February of 1975, North Dakota became the 34th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, because of the efforts of the Coordinating Council for the Equal Rights Amendment (CCERA), a coalition of groups including the ND League of Women Voters (NDLWV), National Organization of Women (NOW) and the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

On Friday, January 2, 12:00 noon at the Sons of Norway in Fargo, four of the women who led the fight for equal rights in North Dakota, Dr. Ellen Chaffee, Donna Chalimonczyk, Bonnie Askew and Lois Altenburg, will discuss their roles in the historic events surrounding the successful push in ND for ratification and the conservative backlash against feminism which threatened to erode support for the ERA. Questions will be taken from the audience.

This event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Red River Valley and it is free and open to the public. For more information, call Mary C. Tintes at (701) 238-0714.
